End-to-end ESD protection with item

When you need to equip your production and logistics operations to protect against ESD, turn to item – modular principles, ESD-safe components and tried-and-tested expertise combine to provide seamless ESD protection.

ESD protection for the entire process chain

People and equipment can accumulate an electrostatic charge at any point in the process chain. That’s why the risk of ESD damage is very high in industry. The modular building kit principle adopted by item makes it easy to integrate components with ESD protection.

item solutions for ESD protection

Design and build a whole range of solutions as part of your ESD protection measures. Make the most of the end-to-end modularity of the item world. Numerous products are available in ESD-safe versions and can be integrated with outstanding flexibility. They are complemented by special components specifically designed for ESD protection, such as an ESD Central Connection, which is fitted to the profile frame of a workbench, or an ESD drag chain, which is used on transport trolleys. Find out about the different areas where ESD protection really matters.

ESD protection – measures, opportunities, importance

When sensitive electronic parts are being processed, all the equipment, fixtures and fittings involved should ideally be ESD safe. Staff should also wear ESD protective clothing (e.g. special ESD shoes and lab coats) and undertake ESD training. If that’s not the case, there is a higher risk of cost increases, quality problems and customer complaints.

What does ESD stand for?

The abbreviation ESD stands for electrostatic discharge – an uncontrolled equalisation of electrical charges between two objects that are charged differently. ESD is caused by friction, contact, and separation between different materials.

Although people can only feel electrostatic discharges when they measure 3500 Volts or more, a discharge as low as 5 Volts is strong enough to damage electronic components. That is why ESD is often considered an “invisible danger”. Without comprehensive ESD protection measures, there is a risk that components can be damaged without anyone realising it, resulting in costly faults and failures later on.

Where is ESD protection important?

ESD protection is particularly important for sectors where integrated circuits are used. These include the semiconductor, automotive, medical technology and aerospace industries. Due to increasing miniaturisation, these components are particularly susceptible to ESD. They can be damaged even just by two objects coming close to each other.

Whether during acceptance checks in incoming goods, transport, processing or packaging in the goods issue department, ESD can strike at any point in the process chain. Movement poses a particular challenge, which is why transport trolleys, tugger trains and conveyor belts should offer ESD protection.

How does item contribute to ESD protective measures?

The item product portfolio includes a wide selection of components for ESD protection, ranging from electrostatically volume-conductive table tops and accessories such as ESD table mats, ESD earthing terminals and ESD drag chains all the way to ESD-safe conveyor belts, castors and roller conveyors.

We also offer support in the form of comprehensive expertise. When purchasing an ESD workbench from item, you will get a special ESD record. This record proves that your ESD workbench has been checked at the relevant ESD measuring points. These include both standard points (the ESD table top and storage surfaces) and additional points that are defined in consultation with you.
