Automated welding for SMEs – with the INNA robot cell

INperfektion, Niederrhein Automation, and item are making it really straightforward for small and medium-sized enterprises to get started with automated production. The INNA robot cell features an impressive modular design, is intuitive to use and boasts outstanding flexibility, making it ideal for applications such as welding, grinding and bonding – even when working with small batch sizes. It all started with a very specific requirement from DAST Schweißtechnik GmbH.

About INperfektion and Niederrhein Automation

INperfektion GmbH, based in Wegberg in Germany, is an item pluspartner that focuses on bespoke automation solutions for SMEs. Niederrhein Automation GmbH, which also operates out of Wegberg, specialises in collaborative robotics. Together with item, they developed the INNA robot cell to make automation economically viable for smaller companies – companies such as DAST Schweißtechnik GmbH.

The challenge – rising requirements and a skills shortage

DAST Schweißtechnik GmbH won an order to manufacture 3500 boilers, each of which needed seven precise weld points. Meeting that demand without automation would mean having several specialists working full time, but with skilled workers in such short supply, that represents a critical bottleneck. What’s more, the need for complex fixtures and long set-up times would have a massive impact on the cost-efficiency of the project. Welding the boilers by hand wouldn’t just take a lot of time, it would also greatly increase the likelihood of errors. At the same time, the customer was applying increasing pressure when it came to quality, demanding reproducible results and punctual delivery.

The solution was a flexible robot cell for efficient series production

Thanks to the INNA robot cell, DAST was able to complete the project on a cost-effective basis. An expert welder trained an integrated cobot from Doosan to carry out the high-precision welding tasks. The rotating table ensures that both setup and welding processes can be carried out simultaneously, which boosts productivity. All 3500 boilers were manufactured in just eight days. The cell is so easy to operate that the job of loading it can be given to semi-skilled workers, therefore freeing up skilled staff to focus on more complex tasks.

This success story shows how collaboration between INperfektion, Niederrhein Automation, and item resulted in a practical solution for the challenges SMEs face.
