The history of item began in 1976 in the German city of Solingen. In the rear building of a toolmaker's workshop, Gerrit Pies and Wolfgang Rixen, two young, ambitious engineers, laid the foundation for item entreprise. The new company initially specialised in the design, construction and sale of special-purpose machines. With the establishment of its first foreign subsidiaries in the 1990s, item's success also grew globally. Today, the item company is a global market leader in industrial modular construction systems. With the establishment of a French subsidiary, item products have also been available directly from the manufacturer in France since 2020.
